A conceptual artist

Keith from Neath

Born in the small town of Neath, South Wales, in 1948, Keith Williams emerged with a spark that not only ignited his own journey but continues to inspire countless others. From a young age, he was captivated by the magic of cinema, often sneaking into the Castle Cinema in Swansea to indulge in horror films as an eager teen. This early fascination blossomed into a powerful passion, leading him to the bustling Film School in London in the Seventies. There, he forged connections with ambitious filmmakers and visionary directors who quickly recognised Keith’s remarkable gift for transforming the simplest of ideas into visual masterpieces.

As the Pop Promo scene began to surge in popularity, Keith found himself at the forefront of a creative revolution. This exciting new medium connected music with video, captivating audiences at home. With a blend of innovation and creativity, Keith and his contemporaries boldly explored novel ways to engage viewers, propelling groundbreaking concepts like The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star,” a watershed moment in music history that would reshape culture itself.

Keith’s vibrant imagination and resourcefulness flourished as he combined art and music in exhilarating ways. His innate ability to hone in on an idea made him a sought-after talent. As MTV emerged and began to redefine the landscape of music, Keith seized the moment to follow his dreams, packing his bags for Hollywood in pursuit of success as a writer. Though he began as a small fish in a vast ocean, Keith's determination shone brightly through the bustling expanse of Hollywood.

Through hard work and unwavering passion, he carved out a niche for himself, successfully developing and selling meaningful treatments for projects like “Moonray” and “Heart of the City.” His journey soon took him to incredible corners of the world, collaborating with iconic figures in entertainment whose artistry would define the essence of Eighties culture, radiating a captivating neon glow.

Keith's collaborations spanned an impressive roster of legendary artists, including Elton John, Madonna, and Tina Turner, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His extraordinary encounter with Michael Jackson during the filming of “Billie Jean” stood as a testament to the magic he sought to create.

By innovating the use of music videos as a promotional tool for film, Keith stepped into uncharted waters, working on memorable projects like “Ghostbusters” and “The Karate Kid Part II.” A poignant highlight was directing a young Robert Downey Jr. in the short film “Arrival,” an experience Robert later fondly hailed as unforgettable.

As opportunities beckoned Keith back to the U.K. and Europe, he returned to his roots in Neath where fresh projects awaited. In 1998, he contributed his talents as a writer to the feature film “Talos the Mummy,” collaborating closely with his longtime friend, Director Russell Mulcahy.

In a culmination of his creative pursuits, Keith fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing and directing a horror film with the production of “Morgue” in 2023. He also brought his personal journey to life through the one-man show, “When Music Videos Ruled the World,” which captivated audiences across Wales and beyond, sharing his adventures in Hollywood.
